Local schools to showcase skills at Kick-a-Rama

Aug 12, 2011 (Bluefield Daily Telegraph - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- PRINCETON The soccer stadium at Princeton Senior High School will showcase the play of more than 200 high school students looking for a slice of the black-and-white ball on Saturday in the annual "Kick-a-Rama" preseason exhibition.

A series of half-hour sessions will fill the boys' portion of the schedule, from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., with seven schools participating, including Princeton and Bluefield. The girls' competitions take place from 2:55 p.m. to about 7:25.

Five girls' teams are scheduled, including Princeton, Bluefield and James Monroe.

Princeton Senior High girls soccer coach Michelle Dye helped set up the event.

Tina Barrett, the soccer boosters president at Princeton, said on Thursday, "I think it's a good opportunity for the coaches to see what kind of talent is out there and what they're up against this season ... in a friendly sort of competition." She said, "We are looking forward to a great day, as long as the weather holds off --but our fields are in good condition. ... I hope all the kids will have a good time and no one gets hurt." Barrett said that the boosters will be raising funds during Saturday's event.

In addition to helping pay for referees for the day, and other annual expenses of the boosters, "a good portion" of the money raised will be converted into scholarships for the Princeton soccer team's graduating seniors next spring.

"Every senior will get a scholarship to continue their education," Barrett said. "They'll get a certain amount of money for every year they played soccer [for Princeton Senior High School] to be used to continue their education." -- Contact Tom Bone at [email protected] To see more of Bluefield Daily Telegraph, or to subscribe to the newspaper, go to http://www.bdtonline.com/.
