Local firm's software assists banks [Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Texas]

(Lubbock Avalanche-Journal (TX) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Mar. 23--Their customers don't know it, but about 400 financial institutions across the country are depending on a Lubbock company to map out their security needs.

CoNetrix, part of 33-year-old Compu-Share, last month rolled out "tandem," a software suite that can mesh with most banks' security needs.

What had been an information security management company working with mid-size banks in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico, now has more than 400 clients in 35 states, ranging from one-office banks where "security officer" is one of several jobs done by the same employee, to large banks with full-time information technology security departments.

"Tandem" takes its name from offering clients two levels of service in a four-module software suite, said Russ Horn, CoNetrix's chief operating officer.

The base module offers financial institutions an ongoing information security risk assessment that also tests compliance with federal laws that protect consumers' nonpublic personal information.

A second set of three modules addresses vendor management issues, information security policies and development, and maintaining a business continuity plan which enables a bank, savings association or credit union to continue operating seamlessly in the event of problems ranging from terrorist attacks to natural disasters that may knock out the institution's main computing system.

CoNetrix also offers periodic testing efforts in which they try to break into systems to ensure policies and programs are functioning properly.

Each of the modules had been rolled out individually, Horn said, adding the company realized by putting the package together, "tandem" becomes a licensed package that can be scaled to the needs of different-size financial institutions.

"It's like a tandem bicycle," Horn said. "You're still the driver, but we're helping you pedal." The company's services through "tandem" include helping financial institutions develop and maintain their information security policies as government regulations change, providing periodic workshops for dealing with training and other issues, developing both continuity and recovery plans for institutions to work with in emergencies, and running continuity testing.
