Liz Claiborne Inc. Dresses Up Business Critical Application Performance With Packeteer PacketShapers
CUPERTINO, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Packeteer(R) (NASDAQ:PKTR), the global leader in WAN Application Delivery, today announced that Liz Claiborne Inc. (NYSE:LIZ), provider of some of the most recognizable branded women's and men's apparel, accessories and fragrance products in the world, is deploying a wide range of its PacketShaper appliances to prioritize, control and intelligently deliver its most business critical applications. Deployed at Liz Claiborne's corporate data center as well as over 35 satellite offices, PacketShapers are relied upon to deliver consistent optimization and performance for voice over IP and crucial ERP, retail management and email applications.
Liz Claiborne maintains a diverse portfolio of domestic and international brands that include DKNY(R) Jeans, Ellen Tracy, Enyce, Lucky Brand Jeans and Kate Spade made available through wholesale and direct-to-consumer channels. To meet the widest range of consumer fashion needs that fluctuate constantly, the company delivers "just in time fashion" by connecting its wide area network via a variety of T1 and DS-3 circuits designed to support business-critical traffic that includes major ERP applications, as well as JD Edwards and Oracle/Peoplesoft applications. In addition, Liz Claiborne deploys nearly 5,000 VOIP phones, with voice calls representing the highest priority traffic on the network.
According to Joe Yankauskas, IT director with Liz Claiborne, "The success of our business model is heavily dependent upon the uninterrupted and high performance delivery of our core voice, ERP and product lifecycle applications. Triggering the need for the Packeteer solution was the PacketShapers' visibility capabilities that confirmed our HTTP, CIFS and MAPI traffic was often consuming far too much bandwidth, thereby imposing performance penalties on our most essential network traffic."
To overcome its application performance and bandwidth management challenges, Liz Claiborne is deploying a variety of PacketShaper models for nearly every one of its WAN circuits companywide. Leveraging the PacketShapers' application quality-of-service module ensures high-priority traffic is guaranteed specific levels of bandwidth to provide ultra high availability and performance, even during peak congestion periods. This "traffic shaping" is especially important for maintaining the integrity of voice calls by virtually eliminating packet loss.
As a global company generating nearly $5 billion in revenue with over 400 retail sites in the US alone, Liz Claiborne also relies on the optimal performance of key applications, such as inventory and allocation management, forecasting, human resources and payroll. PacketShaper quality-of-service technology optimizes the performance of each of these application areas as well.
"We recently adopted Packeteer's Report Center which will enable us to centrally monitor all traffic flowing through our distributed network in order to quickly and easily perform trend analyses and better understand application performance that ties raw metrics into useful data and can be used by our IT teams," said Yankauskas. "This will be a problem resolution tool to not only help us maintain business continuity at the highest performance levels possible, but will also ensure our WAN circuits are performing at peak levels to deliver critical application traffic so we can avoid unnecessary and expensive upgrades."
