Life Wireless offers cellphone service in California

COVINGTON, Ga., May 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Life Wireless™, a cellular provider offering free cellphone service to income-eligible customers, began offering subsidized cellphone service to eligible low-income residents in California today.

Life Wireless is supported by the California LifeLine program via the federal Lifeline program, which was created by Congress in 1985 to ensure that all Americans have access to quality telephone service and the security and opportunities that it affords.

Although California ranks as the eighth largest economy in the world, the state recently matched that with the highest poverty rate in the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly a quarter of California's 38-million people live below the poverty line.

Eligible Life Wireless customers receive a basic mobile handset that includes voicemail, text messaging and call waiting. Customers also have the option of choosing between two monthly plans—the 1250 or unlimited plan.
