Library board discusses temporary cards for Hampton Inn patrons
Nov 19, 2008 (The Duncan Banner - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
For a library, circulation is life. After all, what is a library if no items are being checked out?
Members of the Duncan Public Library Board discussed a way to increase circulation for the library, while teaming up with a new business in town. The idea before the board during Tuesday's regular meeting was to provide temporary cards for regular guests who stay at the Hampton Inn.
Board Chairman Rick Rodgers said, "Someone who's here for a couple of weeks could come over here and look at magazines."
The board said several different ideas of how to do the temporary cards exist. Regardless, the hotel would be responsible for making sure its customers return the books in a timely manner.
Members said it would be easier for Hampton Inn to track down the people who checked out the books because the information would probably be logged in some form by the hotel.
"There needs to be accountability," Rodgers said.
Overall, members said they think it's a good idea to provide temporary cards for hotel patrons, but they said some more discussion about and investigation into the project is needed before they can make a decision.
City Manager Clyde Shaw said it wouldn't only benefit the library, but it would also be advantageous for those on an extended hotel stay.
"It's being offered as a benefit," Shaw said.
No action was taken on the item.
The board also continued its discussion bids for the library's telephone system.
For several months, Library Director Ann Brown has been talking about how no changes can be made to the system, including updating outgoing voice mail messages, because no one has the password for the system.
Brenda Strong, library cataloger, attended the meeting on Brown's behalf. Strong said the phone situation has been an issue since the library moved to the location three years ago.
"They weren't ever set up properly," she said.
While a new system would correct the problems the library staff is having with the phones, Rodgers said there might be a better solution.
He said the old code could possibly be replaced with a universal code, which would give the library access to the phone system.
He said he wants the board to look into alternatives to replacing the phone system.
"I'd hate to have to buy a new phone system for something simple," Rodgers said. No action was taken on the item.
