Featuring home-based businesses, artisans and crafters, and fresh, local produce. This week: The Prince Eddy House Band performs from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Featuring Forbidden Flavours in the café.



* 6 p.m. -- Farmers Market and Craft Sale until 8 p.m. at Deleau Centennial Park, 15 minutes west of Souris on Highway 2.

* 7 p.m. -- Ultimate frisbee pickup game hosted by the Westman Ultimate Disc League until 9 p.m. at the Sportsplex. Many league members show up to play, but the night is open to anyone who would like to try ultimate frisbee without making the commitment of joining a team.


Friday, Aug. 29 * All day -- Northern Lights Barrel Futurity and Derby kicks off at the Keystone Centre. The three-day event is the largest and longest running barrel racing futurity and derby in Manitoba. It brings together North America's best barrel racing owners and trainers and sets them in an action-packed race against the clock.

* All day -- For hockey fans itching to get back into the rink, check out the Brandon Wheat Kings training camp. Practices begin at 8 a.m., followed by a goalie session at 9:30 a.m. and Team Black vs. Team Gold at 10:30 a.m., Team White vs. Team Gold at 6:30 p.m. at the Keystone Centre. Free admission.

* 4 p.m. -- Minnedosa Farmers Market is held until 7 p.m. on North Main Street.

Saturday, Aug. 30 * All day -- Wheat Kings training camp continues today with a practice at 8 a.m., followed by Team White vs. Team Black at 9:30 a.m. An intrasquad game takes place at 6 p.m. Free admission.

* 9 a.m. -- The Global Market is open in downtown Brandon until 1 p.m. Local produce, crafters and home-based businesses. Today: Marquis Project in the café.

* 9 a.m. -- Brandon Farmers Market is now open in The Town Centre parkade until 12 p.m. Local vendors offer in-season produce, baking, jams, pickles, honey, crafts, perennials and more. Free Saturday parking.

* 1 p.m. -- Koushkoupayh Days, "2 Days Done the Métis Way," kicks off with the opening ceremonies in the Riverside Valley, 34 km south of Brandon on Highway 10. Watch for the signs. Featuring authentic Métis food, cultural displays and voyageur competition. Today's entertainment includes Ryan Keplin "The Fiddling Lefty," Nite Life Band, Métis Prairie Steppers, Butch Fleury and open mic with local amateur talent. * 1:30 p.m. -- Little Irish Downs Harness Racing takes place at Killarney's Agricultural and Sports Grounds. Watch Manitoba's top drivers compete for purses which also include parimutuel races. Admission charge.

* 5 p.m. -- Rock the Harvest will take place at the Manitoba Agricultural Museum in Austin, featuring some of Manitoba's homegrown talent. Tonight's lineup includes Crooks, Beetles Tribute Band and Nuthin' But Trouble. Camping, refreshments and food available. Weekend pass costs $40.

* 6 p.m. -- September long weekend is the last weekend at the lake for many families so Sandy Lake is ending the summer season with some early Halloween festivities. Trick-or-treating will take place until 8 p.m. Adults and kids are encouraged to dress up. Residents are encouraged to decorate their house and yard and hand out treats to the ghosts and goblins. Today's features include award-winning fiddler Jason Lepine, Nite Life Band, Turtle Mountain Steppers, Jeffrey Haney, Julianna Moore and a variety show. Food booth serving hotdogs, burgers, traditional Métis foods. Displays include a Métis village, sash weaving and classic cars.

* 10 a.m. -- Day 2 of Rock the Harvest in Austin begins with a pancake breakfast, followed by a full day of performances. Taking the stage first at 1 p.m. is Hicktown, followed by Gaudry Brothers, Kate Ferris, Sharpe Sisters, Johnny Dietrich and the Silver Dollar Band, Cold Hard Cash (Johnny Cash impersonator) and Jerry Sereda. * 11 a.m. -- Dunrea Flea Market takes place at the Boissevain Fairgrounds until 4 p.m.

* 9 a.m. -- Prisoner of War Wagon Tour at Riding Mountain National Park, "From North Africa to the North Woods." Take a wagon trip back to a unique chapter in Canada's history. Allow yourself to be transported back in time to a Canadian prisoner of war camp in the back country of RMNP. Guided by RMNP interpreters, you will ride in a horse-drawn wagon and experience a taste of what some young German soldiers who were captured on the battle lines in North Africa saw and felt when they were shipped to Canada's wilderness. * The Royal Canadian Artillery Museum at CFB Shilo -- "The Great War 1914-1915" in commemoration of the centennial of the First World War is currently on display. The exhibit runs until June 2015. The RCA Museum is open seven days a week from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. until Labour Day.

* The Daly House Museum -- Original home of Brandon's first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly, which was built in 1882 and is the only period museum in western Manitoba. Ordinary citizens of Brandon who were heroes at home during the First World War are commemorated in the new exhibit, "Every Citizen a Soldier," on display until Sept. 1. * The Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum -- Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m, seven days a week. The museum is Canada's only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of the history of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War. Check out our RCAF Memorial Wall display in the museum's hangar. The museum will highlight the progress on the RCAF Second World War Memorial to be unveiled on Sept. 10.

* The Brandon General Museum and Archives -- On the ground floor of the old Manitoba Telephone building at 19 Ninth St. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 1 p.m.- 4 p.m. On display is a new exhibit showcasing Manitoba Telecom Services' history.

The Afghanistan Memorial Vigil includes 190 memorial plagues representing 161 fallen Canadians and 40 Americans who had been under Canadian military command in Afghanistan.
