Learning.com Releases New Digital Math Curriculum for Spanish/English Language Learners in Elementary Grades

PORTLAND, Ore. --(Business Wire)-- Learning.com announces a new Spanish/English Language Learners (ELL) edition of its award-winning Aha!Math supplemental K-5 math curriculum. The Web-delivered curriculum provides one solution to meet two critical needs: for the bilingual educator providing native-language content instruction in the early primary grades, and for the ELL instructor who provides English language instruction with native language support for grades 3-5.

With all the same engaging and effective student curriculum as Aha!Math by Learning.com, this edition provides the K-2 curriculum in Spanish, and in English for grades 3-5. It also includes bilingual math glossaries, and an ELL strategy guide that gives teachers assistance using Aha!Math to help students in language acquisition and mastery of academic vocabulary.

"Educators tell us they want to support their ELL instructors who have expertise in teaching ELL, but less experience teaching math, and also for those teachers who have significant experience teaching math, but less as ELL instructors," says William J. Kelly, Learning.com CEO. "This Spanish/ELL Edition provides the resources to build teachers' skills in math instruction specifically for ELLs." This version of Aha!Math provides a Spanish/English glossary to help teachers focus on academic and schema vocabulary and online journal capabilities for teachers to create math and language literacy exercises for students to use in English, Spanish or both.

Aha!Math's research-based instructional design is ideal for use with both ELLs and native English speaking students with: learning in thematic settings that are culturally neutral, keywords in context, in repetition, and with placement in the instructional content to scaffold the linguistic load, visual modeling of math concepts that provide students with cues for understanding the language-based instruction, paired modalities - students hear the vocabulary while seeing the visual representation of its meaning, math language repetition to help students acquire not only the math content, but also the academic language they need to understand and communicate the math skills they are learning.

Aha!Math provides teachers with an effective, curriculum that builds students' procedural fluency and conceptual understanding in math's most critical concepts. Because of its flexibility, teachers can use its interactive lessons, math games and activities with the whole class and with interactive whiteboards, in small groups and with individual students.

Aha!Math is the winner of the 2009 Distinguished Achievement award for Best K-5 Math Curriculum from the Association of Education Publishers, and is a 2009 Teachers' Pick award by Instructor Magazine.
