Unfashionable Kawasaki Frontale served a fresh warning to the J-League's big guns with a 7-2 demolition of promoted Kyoto Purple Sanga on Saturday while Yokohama F Marinos and Shimizu S-Pulse also maintained their perfect starts to the new season with comfortable wins.
Riding high after opening the season with a 6-0 drubbing of Albirex Niigata last week, Kawasaki went on another goal rampage at Nishikyogoku Stadium, Kazuki Ganaha sparking the rout by heading home the opener after just two minutes.
The Okinawa-born striker took his tally to five in two games with another in the second half while Brazilian Juninho helped himself to a hat-trick to inflict a second straight defeat on last year's second-division champions.
"I told the players after last week's win just to keep playing our own brand of soccer. They did that and we got goals at the right time," said Kawasaki manager Takashi Sekizuka.
"But it's not just down to the forwards. The defensive strengths of the team have also played a part and that was reflected in the result today."
Yokohama, 4-1 winners over Kyoto last Sunday, underlined their title aspirations with a 3-0 win away to Kashima Antlers, Marcio Rodrigues scoring once in each half before fellow Brazilian Dutra completed the job eight minutes from time.
Shimizu, who narrowly avoided relegation last season, eased past Nagoya Grampus Eight 2-0, South Korean striker Cho Jae Jin sealing victory in the 33rd minute at Nihondaira Stadium.
Elsewhere, Urawa Reds picked up their first win of the season by beating Jubilo Iwata 3-1 in front of a crowd of almost 57,000 to ensure a happy return to Japan midfielder Shinji Ono.
First-half goals from Marcus Tulio Tanaka and Alessandro Santos set Urawa Reds on their way before Robson Ponte capitalized on a defensive blunder from Takayuki Chano to wrap up the points.
Chano, who replaced injured Makoto Tanaka in the second half, went some way to atoning for his earlier blunder when he headed a consolation for the visitors two minutes from time.
Ono, who rejoined the Reds from Feyenoord in January after four and a half years in the Netherlands, had a quiet game but was given a standing ovation from home fans after he left the pitch in the 84th minute for substitute Teruaki Kurobe.
Ventforet Kofu picked up their first point in the top flight as a late equalizer from last season's playoff hero Bare gave them a 2-2 draw away to JEF United Chiba while Niigata rebounded with a 2-0 win over visiting FC Tokyo.
In Saturday's evening fixture, defender Yukio Tsuchiya headed home a corner in the 72nd minute to earn Omiya Ardija a 1-1 draw away to Avispa Fukuoka.
Defending champions Gamba Osaka make the short trip across town to take on local rivals Cerezo Osaka while Oita Trinita welcome the visit of Sanfrecce Hiroshima on Sunday.
