Lauderhill kids visit Lauderdale Lakes college [Sun Sentinel, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.]

(South Florida Sun-Sentinel (FL) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jun. 7--Florida Career College in Lauderdale Lakes recently played host to second-graders from Castle Hill Elementary in Lauderhill.

Michael Alford and Marcia Brown's second-grade classes visited the college as part of an initiative by Kids and the Power of Work.

"[The program] broadens their horizons to the possibilities of different types of careers," said John Casbarro, president of Learning for Success, which is the South Florida KAPOW affiliate.

The program offers students the opportunity to visit local colleges and businesses and learn skills associated with careers.

"This is the first year that Florida Career College is participating with KAPOW," said Barbara Hewitt, marketing director for the college. "The students have the opportunity to visit and interact within a college environment and to understand the various roles within the college business." The event tackles four primary goals: exposes students to a wide variety of jobs, teaches employability skills, helps them make connections between the world of school and the world of work, and motivates them through hands-on or experiential activities.

"[This is an opportunity] for them to do something that's different from going to school and see things for when they become a grown-up," said Enrique Caro, campus director.

The students toured the college and learned about the various departments. They visited several offices such as the registrar, admissions, student and career services, and financial services, and talked to staff members.

The children then made their way to three of the school's classes: massage therapy, information technology and CPR.

For the massage therapy class, students learned the importance of the trade and received a hand massage. For the information technology portion, they were introduced to the components of a motherboard, or circuit board, of a computer. The CPR classes allowed them to practice on dummies.

"My students have gained more knowledge about the endless possibilities of becoming whatever they want to be in life. They now know just how important an education really is," Brown said. "I believe that they all are eager about attending some type of college and pursuing their dreams. It was really something positive and was great exposure for my students."
