Latest outsourcing mantra: just catch them young

(The Times of India)NEW DELHI: Catch'em younger. After scripting a global success story, the Indian BPO industry is looking to schoolchildren to address a perennial problem - high attrition rates. An industry body, Call Centre Association of India CCAI), in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry CII), will launch a new programme, eKaliber', that aims to train 12th class students across the country for a career in the BPO sector. If successful, this move could enable an entire generation to leapfrog onto a new path of success very early in life.

The association has been talking to various governments besides a host of private schools and the response so far has been "positive". The programme, insiders say, will help the industry meet the projected demand-supply gap.

According to Nasscom, employment in the ITES-BPO industry is forecast to exceed one million people by 2007-08. At present, the sector employs a little over 2.6 lakh people. At this rate, it will need over 7 lakh skilled people in two to three years.

In 2003-04, ITES-BPO accounted for the creation of over 73,500 new jobs. In terms of revenues, Nasscom estimates it grew at a whopping 44.4 per cent , amassing $ 5.7 billion by the end of 2004-05.

To sustain growth, there's a need to generate a large pool of resources.

"As we ramp up operations, we need trained manpower to spearhead the growth," says Sam Chopra, president, CCAI.

The curriculum for schoolchildren has been developed by City & Guilds, an agency specialising in certification. The module would train youngsters on their conversational and soft skills.

Training would also be provided on technology, its importance and usability in the industry. Another part of the curriculum will impart knowledge about corporate hierarchy and practices overseas.

There are, however, question marks on whether there's enough appeal for such jobs given its nature - skeptics say it's monotonous, mechanical and potentially disturbs the biological clock. Brushing aside such apprehensions, Deepak Kapoor, an industry insider, avers: "People now acknowledge the ability of this industry to offer long-term careers to a very young force."
