Lancope's Tom Cross Joins Georgia Tech Information Security Center (GTISC) Industry Advisory Board

ATLANTA, Dec. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Lancope, Inc., a leader in flow-based security and network performance monitoring, announces that its director of security research, Tom Cross, has joined the Georgia Tech Information Security Center (GTISC) industry advisory board. As a member of the board, Cross will provide the academic research organization with input and advice as it works to improve global information security.

"Fundamental research at the Georgia Tech Information Security Center is making a huge difference in the fight against computer crime, and Lancope is proud to have the opportunity to be involved and support this critically important work," said Cross. "Over the years, Georgia has produced a cluster of innovative technology companies that have made breakthroughs in the field of information security. Georgia Tech has been the centerpiece of this community, providing a crossroads where academic researchers, engineering students and business professionals come together." Founded by Georgia Institute of Technology professor, Dr. John Copeland, Lancope has been working to develop innovative solutions for cyber security since 2000. Not relying on signature updates to detect attacks, Lancope's StealthWatch® System conducts sophisticated, behavioral analysis on NetFlow, IPFIX and other flow data to provide in-depth, internal network visibility. Combined with advanced threat context from StealthWatch, including application, identity and mobile device awareness, this in-depth visibility enables Lancope users to detect a robust range of threats lurking within the network - including zero-day, insider and Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) attacks.

In addition to developing its own behavioral algorithms and conducting in-house threat research through its StealthWatch Labs team, Lancope works with a wide range of partners, including Cisco and Team Cymru, to remain on the cutting edge of threat intelligence and security defenses.

"Like Lancope, many of Atlanta's technology companies were founded at Georgia Tech," said Wenke Lee, director of GTISC. "Industry collaboration is critical to our program, and to the success of Georgia's security industry as a whole. We are excited to have Tom Cross, a noted expert in threat research, join our advisory board, and look forward to the insights he will bring to our students, faculty and projects." As the director of security research for Lancope, Cross brings over a decade of experience as a security researcher and thought leader. He was previously manager of the IBM X-Force Advanced Research team where he focused on the innovation of intrusion prevention technologies. He is credited with discovering a number of critical security vulnerabilities in enterprise-class software, and frequently speaks on information security at conferences around the world. Cross earned a degree in computer engineering from Georgia Tech.
