Lady Cubs suffer first loss of season to Rider squad

Nov 25, 2009 (The Olney Enterprise - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Lady Cubs' varsity squad suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of Rider during action on the road Thursday, Nov. 19. Rider defeated Olney 50-34 in the match, and Coach Ramsey Ghazal cited a breakdown in defense as a big reason for the loss.

"As a team, we really take pride in our defense and taking care of the ball," Ghazal said. "We did not do a good job in those two areas Thursday night. Our team defense was slow in rotating to help. We did not block out like we need to and we turned the ball over way too much." Olney trailed 20-6 after the first period and 30-18 at the half.

The Lady Cubs scored eight points in both the third and fourth quarters, while Rider added 20 second half points.

Though the team had some problems on defense, Ghazal said the game will be beneficial to the Lady Cubs in the long run.

"Rider is good enough to expose us in those areas, and that is why we play good teams," he said. "We now can work really hard in practice to improve those areas." Individually, the coach said Malia Turner did a great job for the Lady Cubs in all areas of the game. She scored four points, had six rebounds, five assists, six steals and one turnover. Halli Betts posted 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists, five steals and five turnovers. Jamie Couch had nine points, three rebounds and six steals.

As a team, the Lady Cubs went eight for 14 from the free throw line, made two of 12 attempted three pointers and 10 of 22 shots for two.

Olney's girls will participate in Pool C of the annual Fantasy of Lights Tournament this weekend in and around Wichita Falls. They will face off against Pottsboro at noon Friday, Nov. 27 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

They will play Rio Vista at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, in the Burkburnett A gym. On Tuesday, Dec. 1, the girls play at Vernon.
