La Grande seeks people to volunteer

Feb 14, 2012 (The Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The time has come once again to ask not what your city can do for you, but what you can do for your city.

The City of La Grande is seeking people to volunteer for positions on six different advisory commissions and committees. Individuals serving as unpaid members play a vital role assisting staff and the city council by making recommendations on a variety of administrative and policy making decisions.

"There is something for everyone among the remaining vacant seats," said City Recorder Sandy Lund.

The vacancies include: --Seven seats on the Air Quality Advisory Commission, terms for which will begin immediately on appointment. Two of the seats may be filled by a resident of the area within the city's Urban Renewal Growth Boundary or within the boundaries of Union County. Applicants may express a preference for term duration.

--One seat on the Community Landscape and Forestry Advisory Commission, which must be filled by a resident of the city. The term will begin immediately on appointment and expire Dec. 31, 2014.

--One seat on the Library Advisory Commission, which must be filled by a city resident. The term begins immediately upon appointment and expires Dec. 31, 2012.

--Three seats on the Parking, Traffic Safety and Street Maintenance Advisory Commission, all of which must be filled by residents of the city. The terms will be filled immediately upon appointment. Two will expire Dec. 31, 2012, and one Dec. 31, 2013. Applicants may express a preference for term duration.

--One seat on the Union County Tourism Promotion Committee. This committee addresses, among other tourism-related issues, promotions for Union County's tourism attraction efforts. The committee is typically scheduled to meet each Friday at 11 a.m. in the Colleen F. Johnson Community Room of the Cook Memorial Library. The available seat is for a representative of the retail industry (owner or manager).

--Three seats on the Urban Renewal Advisory Commission, all of which must be filled by residents of the city or property or business owners within the city limits who are interested in curing and preventing conditions of blight and improving the physical, economic and social conditions within the city's Urban Renewal District.

These terms will be filled immediately upon appointment and expire on Dec. 31, 2012, 2013 and 2014 respectively. Applicants may express a preference for term duration.

Applications are available from Lund or Angelika Brooks, assistant to the city manager on the second floor of city hall, 1000 Adams Ave.

They also may be downloaded from the city's website at www.cityoflagrande.org, though applications on the website do not have a "fill" feature at this time.

Opportunities to apply for vacant seats on the committees and commissions will remain available until all the vacancies are filled.
