KABUL - At least 16 suspected Taliban militants were killed in fighting with Afghan security forces in the restive southern Afghanistan, a Defense Ministry spokesman said Wednesday.
The militants were killed in a two-hour gun battle with security forces in Spin Boldak in Kandahar Province on Tuesday, the spokesman said.

During a six-day trip to Guizhou Province at the invitation of the China National Tourism Administration, leaders of a Japan Association of Travel Agents delegation said they will promote the province to Japanese tourists, China's Xinhua News Agency and a Beijing-based agent said.

TOKYO - A U.S. health food maker on Wednesday appealed to the Supreme Court a high court ruling which allowed a reporter to keep a news source on a report about the taxation of the U.S. firm's Japanese subsidiary confidential, its officials said.
The Tokyo High Court on Friday accepted the refusal of the reporter for Japan Broadcasting Corp., known as NHK, to reveal the news source, saying news-gathering activities serve as a foundation for the freedom of the press that satisfies the public's right to know.

KABUL - The U.N. Children's Fund on Wednesday warned that women and children in Afghanistan continue to suffer high rates of child and maternal mortality, low levels of school enrolment and neglect of children's fundamental rights.
In a statement, UNICEF's Deputy Executive Director Rima Salah said, "As the school gates across Afghanistan open again for a new academic year, at least one in two girls who should be in classes will remain at home."

FUKUSHIMA, Japan - A 52-year-old man was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison for killing a woman and her daughter and stealing some 50,000 yen in cash in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, in 2004.
According to the ruling at the Fukushima District Court, Masahiro Takashio fatally stabbed Asako Hakozaki, 83, and her daughter Kiyoko, 55, in their house and stole the cash on March 18, 2004.
---------- Court to open juvenile trial on girl suspected of poisoning mother
SHIZUOKA, Japan - The Shizuoka Family Court will open a juvenile trial against a 16-year-old girl accused of attempted murder for allegedly poisoning her mother, court sources said Wednesday.
The court's branch office in the city of Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture, also decided to hold the first hearing on the girl by April 4, the deadline for the girl's four-week detention at a juvenile detention center, and allow a prosecutor to be present at the trial.
