LIMA - Asia-Pacific leaders were "committed" Saturday to make a breakthrough "next month" in the long-running free trade talks under the World Trade Organization in an effort to counter the impact of the expanding global financial crisis.
"We are committed to reach agreement on modalities next month on the basis of progress made to date" on the stalled WTO negotiations, they said in a special statement, released after the first-day session of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit.

WASHINGTON - U.S. President-elect Barack Obama on Saturday announced that his presidential election campaigner Robert Gibbs will serve White House press secretary in his incoming administration.
Gibbs, 37, has served as a public relations officer for Obama since a Senate election in 2004.
---------- Japan may mull more stimulus measures after 2nd extra budget
TOKYO - In the event that the economy worsens, the government may consider compiling more stimulus measures even after a second extra budget for fiscal 2008 passes parliament, Finance Minister Shoichi Nakagawa said Sunday.
"If something needs to be done, we will do it, including fiscal, tax and monetary measures," he told an NHK program.

LIMA - Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev agreed Saturday to realize a visit to Japan early next year by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin as part of top-level political dialogue, Japanese officials said.
The two, who met on the sidelines of a Pacific Rim leaders' summit in the Peruvian capital, also shared the view that Tokyo and Moscow will strive to advance talks on a decades-old territorial dispute, the officials told reporters.
---------- Nabbed man admits involvement in vice-minister murder, assault cases
TOKYO - A 46-year-old man arrested on suspicion of a sword and firearms control law violation has admitted to his involvement in the murders of a former vice health and welfare minister and his wife, as well as his involvement in the assault on the wife of another former vice health minister, police said.
The Tokyo and Saitama police on Sunday jointly searched the home in Saitama of Takeshi Koizumi on suspicion of attempted murder over the assault case.
