TOKYO - The U.S. dollar traded around the 107 yen line Friday morning in Tokyo, after falling sharply overnight on growing uncertainty over the U.S. economic outlook due partly to deteriorating U.S. employment conditions.

The euro fell to a 10-and-a-half-month low against the dollar and a 13-month low against the yen after the European Central Bank slashed its eurozone economic growth forecast for 2008 and 2009.

---------- Honda eyes introducing Acura luxury brand vehicles in Russia

TOKYO - Honda Motor Co. is considering introducing the Acura series of luxury vehicles in Russia in 2010 at the earliest, senior managing director Shigeru Takagi said Friday.

Honda has been marketing the upscale Acura brand vehicles in North America and China. They include the top-of-the-line Acura RL with a 3.7-liter V6 engine.

---------- Gov't plans nationwide farmland brokerage services

TOKYO - The farm ministry plans nationwide intermediary services to bring together farmers who want to buy more land and those who are willing to pull out of agriculture and sell their farmlands, ministry officials said Friday.

The plan, which the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries intends to launch in fiscal 2009 from April next year, is aimed at consolidating farmlands in Japan to enhance economies of scale and boost productivity, the officials said.



---------- Japanese manufacturers' pretax profits down 11.7% in April-June

TOKYO - Japanese manufacturers' pretax profits in the April-June period of 2008 fell 11.7 percent from a year earlier, mirroring deteriorating business conditions caused by raw material price hikes and a U.S. economic slowdown, the Finance Ministry said Friday.



Their profits dropped for the fourth straight quarter, with almost all major manufacturing sectors posting declines.

---------- Rice with higher-than-allowed pesticide level sold for edible use

TOKYO - A rice products maker in Osaka sold imported rice containing higher-than-allowed level of pesticide residue for edible use, despite a government ban, the farm ministry said Friday.

The Osaka-based company, Mikasa Foods, also sold products processed from the rice, the ministry said. The ministry said it has ordered the company to collect the rice and processed products.
