KID: Board election scheduled Dec. 8

Nov 27, 2009 (Tri-City Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- KENNEWICK All owners of approximately 21,000 properties in the 55,000-acre Kennewick Irrigation District are eligible to vote in the Dec. 8 election, with their voting strength based on the size of the properties they own.

That's one of several rules unique to Washington's irrigation districts, which operate under different than those for primary and general elections.

State law that applies to irrigation districts allows two votes per parcel or adjacent parcels that are up to five acres in size. Owners of larger parcels are allowed two votes per five acres.

For example, that would allow two votes for the owner of a one-half-acre parcel, and 40 votes for the owner of 100 acres.

The KID, which maintains 88 miles of canal, pipes and dozens of pumps in its water distribution systems, will conduct its election at one voting place and by mail-in absentee ballot.

Voting will occur at the KID offices at 12 W. Kennewick Ave. from 1 to 8 p.m. Dec. 8. Absentee ballots can be requested by filing a request form before 5 p.m. Dec. 3.

KID will attempt to contact the requesting elector of any request received after that date using the phone number given on the form The form is available at www.kid.org and by following the link to KID elections forms. Absentee ballots also may be picked up at KID offices during business hours any day between Dec. 3 and Dec. 8.

KID voters also should know that jointly-owned properties, such as those owned by a husband and wife, require that each person have a right to vote. One person can vote for the couple only if an authorization form has been signed. A copy of that form also is available on KID's website.
