Keller Rohrback L.L.P. Files Amicus Brief with Washington Supreme Court on Behalf of ACLU-WA

On August 7, 2017, Keller Rohrback L.L.P. partners David Copley and Laura Gerber, representing the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington (ACLU) and 102 other organizations and individuals, filed a Brief of Amici Curiae ("Friends of the Court") with the Washington Supreme Court in the case In re Tarra Denelle Simmons, Bar Applicant, Supreme Court No. 201,671-5 ("Simmons"). The issue before the Court is whether to allow Tarra Simmons, a local civil rights leader and recent graduate of Seattle University Law School, to take the Bar Examination. A review committee recommended that she not be allowed to do so because she lacked sufficient "character and fitness." According to the review committee, Simmons committed crimes and has not fully atoned for that misconduct. According to the ACLU and other supporters, the record presented to the review committee demonstrates that Ms. Simmons has demonstrated complete rehabilitation through many years of hard work, community service, civil rights leadership, and an exceptional law school record. The Washington Supreme Court will make the ultimate decision regarding Ms. Simmons' bar application.
