Keating Announces Congressional Stem Competition Winner

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WASHINGTON, July 25 -- Rep. William Keating, D-Mass. (9th CD), issued the following news release: Rep. Keating is pleased to announce the winner of the first Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Competition for the 9th District. Patricia Dias of New Bedford High School, who is a rising senior, developed an app to track inventory at the New Bedford High School Store.

"Patricia's work was truly outstanding, and I was honored to recognize her as this year's winner for the 9th District. I would also like to thank the Cape Cod Tech Council for its partnership in this competition, and for assisting with the judging of the winning entry," said Rep. Keating.

"We are thrilled that that one of our own students from New Bedford High School won the competition," said Dr. Pia Durkin, Superintendent of New Bedford Public Schools. "Patricia Dias was able to demonstrate above all others - the engagement, ingenuity, and solution-driven focus to develop software that will improve the work of others. She represents what a rigorous high school education is all about and the efforts that the district and our High School are striving toward to attain excellence for every student who attends New Bedford's schools." The first annual Congressional STEM Academic Competition took place in June, focusing on software development for its inaugural challenge. This new competition, which is modeled on the long-held Congressional Art Competition, will promote youth involvement in computer sciences and other STEM fields by recognizing and encouraging student talent within these academic areas. Rep. Keating looks forward to hosting this competition again next year, and encourages young people to develop the STEM skills they will need to succeed in the 21st century economy.
