Karol Lyn Newman Joins Wilkinson Barker Knauer to Lead the Firm's Energy Practice


Wilkinson Barker Knauer, LLP is pleased to announce that Karol Lyn Newman and her industry-leading energy practice have joined the firm. As a partner in Washington, she will lead the firm's federal regulatory energy practice, closely coordinating her work with the firm's growing Denver-based energy practice.

Ms. Newman has been recognized as a leading energy lawyer in Best Lawyers in America for the past ten years, and received "Best in Energy, Natural Resources, and Mining" honors at the Americas Women in Business Law Awards in 2012. She advises regulated and unregulated entities (both large and small) in corporate restructurings; acquisitions and partnering arrangements; federal and state regulatory and litigtion strategies; regulatory enforcement matters; and mediation and negotiation of contract and regulatory disputes. She has successfully litigated many cases before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and in the federal courts, obtaining reversals of agency action in cases having national implications for the industry, and has successfully negotiated settlements in complex regulatory and commercial disputes. Her expertise includes issues of federal jurisdiction; preemption; eminent domain; regulatory takings; the constitutionality of federal legislation; affiliated transactions; misuse of the administrative process; ratemaking, capacity allocations, and capacity transfers; the permitting of federally-regulated facilities; and environmental concerns.



Ms. Newman is an honors graduate of both the University of Maryland and the University of Maryland School of Law, where she was Articles Editor of the Maryland Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. She also is a member of the American Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association, the Maryland Bar Association, and the Energy Bar Association. Ms. Newman is admitted to practice in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and the following federal courts: United States Supreme Court; United States Courts of Appeals for the Third, Fourth, Fifth, Tenth, Eleventh and District of Columbia Circuits; and the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.
