Karmanos Cancer Institute Deploying Ascom Wireless Communication

(Wireless News Via Acquire Media NewsEdge)
Ascom, a provider of on-site wireless communications solutions, has
been chosen to provide wireless communications to the Barbara Ann
Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Michigan.

Karmanos is Michigan's only hospital completely devoted to fighting
cancer and is one of 41 National Cancer Institute-designated
comprehensive cancer centers in the country.

To facilitate communications and eliminate response time to call for
its inpatients, Karmanos chose Ascom's VoWiFi FreeNET solution. The
device acts not only as a voice communications device but also
integrates with Karmanos' new Rauland-Borg Nurse Call System. Through
Ascom's Medamax Gateway, Karmanos' patient care team receives immediate
notification of patient requests and improves staff communication to
decrease wait time. The handsets are currently in all patient areas
with plans to add more handsets when Karmanos completes renovations.
Karmanos is also looking at possible future integrations that would,
for example allow caregivers to receive critical value results and
alarms.

According to Karmanos' Karen Goldman, Chief Nursing Officer, the
Karmanos Cancer Institute established wireless network service to
enhance the staffs' delivery of care to patients, as well as for the
convenience of patients and guests.

"The addition of Ascom VoWiFi technology maximizes our investment and

facilitates instant communications between all parties involved in
patient care," Goldman said. She added that in addition to all
inpatient units Ascom is now in Karmanos' outpatient clinics and its
pharmacy.

The Ascom FreeNET standards-based solution consists of market-specific
VoWiFi portable handsets with direct SIP connection or optional VoIP
Gateway for integration to an existing circuit-switched PBX.

The Ascom UNITE Messaging Suite is a robust messaging integration
solution consisting of small network appliances with Ascom software
applications utilizing a Linux kernel - providing reliability and
stability.
