Yeh Nan-ming, director of MIRDC's R&D department, pointed out that Tokusyuukai is currently the No. 2 medical institution in Japan and an internationalized medical institution that has been actively setting up hospitals overseas, including a new branch in Bulgaria this year. Yeh said that Tokusyuukai used to procure needed medical devices in Japan only, but it has decided to visit Taiwan for purchasing some products thanks to the institution's friendship with the island

MIRDC is collecting related information on suppliers to serve as reference for Tokusyuukai's procurement officials, Yeh said

MIRDC is cooperating with Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) Administration and set up a 14-hectare biotechnology and medical-device industry zone in the Kaohsiung Science Park (formerly STSP's Luchu Base), where four local makers have promised to set up production facilities

The STSP Administration said that a total of 42 medical-device-related companies are expected to invest in the Kaohsiung park by the end of year and the production value generated by firms in the medical-device zone is expected to account for over one-third of Taiwan's overall medical-device output value in 2010. In addition, the administration stressed, the medical-device zone is expected to become the world's largest medical-device R&D and manufacturing center in 2010 and the world's largest supply base for at least 10 medical devices

Yeh pointed out Taiwan owns advantages in the development of several medical-device product categories, including medium-to-small-size monitoring equipment and surgery instrument, medical information processing systems. Taiwan has become the world's No. 1 maker of some medical devices, including thermometers, blood-pressure meters, glucose meters, and orthopedic devices, etc

The director said that the special medical-device zone in Kaohsiung Science Park is expected to integrate established resources of metal manufacturing, processing, precision forging, and mold/die development in southern Taiwan and form an industry cluster in the park.
