Japan, Vietnam start 2nd FTA study session in Tokyo+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)TOKYO, April 26_(Kyodo) _ Japan and Vietnam began their second study session in a three-day run Wednesday in Tokyo to explore the possibility of signing a bilateral free trade agreement.

During this meeting, Tokyo aims to conclude the feasibility study to launch formal FTA talks later this year, a Japanese official said.

The two countries began the study session after an agreement between Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and his Vietnamese counterpart Phan Van Khai in December to establish such a framework.

Vietnam is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which strives to conclude FTA talks with Japan by next March.

Regarding ASEAN members, Japan has an FTA with Singapore and has signed one with Malaysia. It has struck basic accords for similar undertakings with the Philippines and Thailand and been in official talks with Indonesia.

The other ASEAN economies are Brunei, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.
