Japan, U.S. agree on deploying U.S. radar in Aomori later this year+
(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)AOMORI, Japan, March 3_(Kyodo) _ Japan and the United States have agreed to deploy U.S. military radar for missile defense at Japan's Air Self-Defense Force base in Tsugaru, Aomori Prefecture, in the latter half of this year, Japanese officials said Friday.
In this connection, Defense Facilities Administration Agency officials made a formal request Friday to the Aomori prefectural and Tsugaru municipal governments to host the mobile X-band radar for an advanced early warning system against ballistic missiles.
The radar, aimed at detecting and intercepting ballistic missiles, will be set up at the ASDF base facing the Sea of Japan, and about 10 U.S. military personnel and roughly 50 civilians, including technicians and guards, will be stationed at the facility at any given time, according to agency officials.
Atsushi Watanabe, the head of the agency's Facilities Department who visited Aomori to make the request, told reporters, "There is a possibility that the U.S. military's Misawa base (in Aomori Prefecture) will serve as the center for rear-area support."
The Aomori and Tsugaru governments are expected to consider the agency's request through discussions in the respective local assemblies and by holding presentation sessions for residents in the area.
Tsugaru Mayor Hiroyoshi Fukushima said residents are concerned about the safety of the radar and the possibility that public security might deteriorate due to the presence of the U.S. military.
The deployment of the radar is to be included in a report scheduled to be compiled by the Japanese and U.S. governments by the end of March concerning plans for U.S. military realignment in Japan.
The U.S. military conducted an on-site survey at the ASDF base in Tsugaru last December to check the electromagnetic wave and communications environment, and on Friday confirmed the land features of the base.
The radar deployment will be part of the missile defense cooperation between Japan and the United States, which began a joint project on the topic after North Korea fired a long-range missile in August 1998, part of which flew over Japan and dropped into the Pacific Ocean.
