Japan, S. Korea to increase no. of working holiday visas issued+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)TOKYO, March 29_(Kyodo) _ Japan and South Korea agreed Wednesday to increase from this year the number of visas to be issued under a "working holiday" program allowing young travelers from the two nations to work during visits to the other country to cover their staying costs, Japanese Foreign Ministry officials said.

The accord allows both nations to expand the slots for working holiday visas from the current 1,800 annually to 3,600 and aims to increase exchanges between the two countries, the officials said.

The two nations exchanged verbal notes to this effect in Tokyo based on an agreement reached in January 2003. The agreement to aim for bilateral exchanges of more than 10,000 people a year was made in commemoration of their success in co-hosting the 2002 World Cup soccer finals.

According to the officials, the number of visas South Korea requested to be issued last year totaled 8,844 while Japan requested 460. Their nations' working holiday scheme began in 1998.

Japan has also implemented similar programs with other countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Germany and Canada.
