Japan Post to close 8 leisure accommodation facilities

(Kyodo News International (Tokyo) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Mar. 28--TOKYO -- Japan Post has decided to close down eight of its hotel-like accommodation and cultural facilities across the nation at the end of March 2007 before its privatization process starts in October that year, its officials said Monday.

The plan is intended to expedite the restructuring of the loss-making facilities ahead of Japan Post's privatization, the officials said.

The state-backed organization will make an official announcement Tuesday, they said.

Japan Post will close down the accommodation facilities -- which are similar to hotels or guest houses -- and cultural facilities featuring conference rooms and auditoriums for the customers of its postal savings services.

The eight facilities are accommodation facilities in the cities of Sapporo, Niigata, Kanazawa, Fukuoka, Naha in Okinawa Prefecture, Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture and Shima in Mie Prefecture, and a cultural facility in Chiba.

At a facility in Hiroshima Prefecture, the attached auditorium will be closed while the accommodation section will be kept, according to the officials.

Japan Post will consider whether or not to sell off the facilities to the nearby local governments, they said.
