Japan 2011 Mobile Phone Shipments Down for 1st Time in 2 Yrs [Jiji Press English News Service]

(Jiji Press English News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Tokyo, Feb. 14 (Jiji Press)--Mobile phone shipments in Japan in 2011 fell 11.1 pct from the previous year to 29,584,000 units, down for the first time in two years, industry data showed Tuesday.

The data from the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) and the Communications and Information Network Association of Japan (CIAJ) mainly cover phones made by Japanese makers.

Foreign makers, such as Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., are enjoying robust sales of their smartphones in the Japanese market. If these foreign-made handsets had been included in the data, overall shipments would have almost leveled off in 2011, industry analysts said.

In October-December, domestic mobile phone shipments fell 14.4 pct from a year before to 6,871,000 units, according to the data from the two Japanese groups. But smartphone shipments surged some 2.6-fold to 2,959,000 units, accounting for 43.1 pct of the total shipments in the period.

In December alone, mobile phone shipments grew 5.9 pct to 3,078,000 units, up for the first time in four months.END (c) 2012 ProQuest Information and Learning Company; All Rights Reserved.
