it's a first, bae says: dual dry docking of aegis guided missile destroyers other notables [Virginian - Pilot]
(Virginian - Pilot Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Two Navy destroyers - the Mason and the Bulkeley - are sitting back to back, in the same dry dock, at BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair.
It took 19 hours and 160 BAE shipyard employees to make it happen - the first dual dry docking of two Aegis guided missile destroyers, according to BAE.
The Titan dry dock into which the vessels were placed is the largest floating dry dock on the East Coast - 950 feet long and 160 feet wide, with a lift capacity of 52,000 tons. Each of the destroyers weighs about 9,200 tons.
The ships will be in the dry dock, undergoing routine repairs and modification work, until the end of April, BAE spokesman Neil Franz wrote in an email.

Enviva LP
owner of chesapeake site to supply pellets for e.on
Bethesda, Md.-based Enviva LP will supply E.ON, one of the world's largest investor-owned utilities, with 240,000 metric tons per year of wood pellets, according to a multiple-year agreement announced last week.
Enviva, which bought the former Giant Cement Co. port terminal on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River early last year, has been supplying wood chips and wood pellets to customers in the United States and Europe since 2007. E.ON is based in Dusseldorf, Germany.
About 500,000 tons of wood pellets are projected to be shipped out of the Chesapeake facility this year, said Elizabeth Woodworth, a spokeswoman. That amount is expected to triple by the second half of 2013, she said.
In November, Enviva opened up a new pellet plant in Ahoskie, N.C. Two additional plants are in the planning stages - one in Courtland and another in Northampton County, N.C.
As production at its plants grows, Enviva expects to have ships moving through the port terminal every week and a half in a year's time.
