'Do It Right' banners created by local graphic design students [Williamson Daily News, W.Va.]

(Williamson Daily News (WV) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 25--WILLIAMSON -- The Graphic Design students of Mingo Central Vocational School were hired by the Mingo County Board of Education (BOE) to create banners for their new motto 'Do It Right'. The originator of the motto, June Glover, was presented with a sneak preview at the October BOE meeting.

The Simulated Workplace initiative was implemented by the West Virginia Department of Education's Division of Adult and Technical Education to ensure students are trained in the most up-to-date and advanced learning environments.

Doug Martin, Graphic Design teacher, alongside with his 12 graphic arts students created their simulated company smART DESIGN and the company was hired by Superintendent Robert Bobbera, Ed.D, to create the banners for the BOE.

Martin pulled his juniors together as a company and they brain stormed with ideas on how to create the banners. The mechanics of the company began by choosing a company leader, Co-Creative Director Jessica Sturgell. Each student was given a job title and in some cases multiple job titles. As in the real world, the students, regardless of their positions in the company, worked together as a team, each one bringing creative and fresh ideas.

The students chose the chalk board effect for the banners as they look at a chalkboard and chalk as a symbol of education. 'Do it Right' banners will be ready for the schools in November and each school could receive three banners or more.

The students created six different chalkboard designs ranging from banners to posters. Elementary schools will be provided with banners appropriate to their age groups and this thought process will be used for middle and high schools.

Student Kara Lester, Information Technology Director, designer and photographer said "Do it right is what they want to do in Mingo Central." Lester also said "we want students to see it is not always about sports but education and how we want to do it right." Student Megan Taylor, Art Director, said her favorite part of the project was hands on, working as a team and everyone working together.

Student Dustin Chambers, Designer, handled most of the editing on the computer using the software Photoshop. Doug is leaning toward a career in teaching design and said "maybe one day I will take Doug's job. " Martin has been teaching for 12 years and before beginning his teaching career he was a graphic designer working as a Walt Disney imaginer and also owned his own business. Martin is from Delbarton and has always had a desire to teach.
