Israel welcomes nomination of new IAEA chief
JERUSALEM, Jul 02, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) --
The Israel Atomic Energy
Commission released Thursday a formal statement on behalf of the
Israeli government, welcoming the UN's choice of Japanese
ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya
Amano for the next IAEA director general.
"The State of Israel has every faith in ambassador Amano's
capabilities and trusts in his ability to head this important
agency and its challenges," said the statement.
Israel will lend Amano whatever help he needs to succeed in his
new position, it added.
Earlier on Thursday, after fierce competition, 61-year-old
Amano finally won the necessary majority votes to be the next IAEA
director general.
The IAEA General Assembly in September will discuss and
probably approve Amano as the new director general. He will
officially succeed the current IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei on
Dec. 1.
