IRS auctions Dolly Vinsant Memorial Hospital for $1.1 million: San Benito Enterprises Inc. purchased hospital
(Valley Morning Star (Harlingen, TX) (KRT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jul. 19--SAN BENITO -- Little information is available about the company that purchased Dolly Vinsant Memorial Hospital for $1.1 million at an Internal Revenue Service auction.
Rick Hoffman, attorney for San Benito Health Care 1, which owned the hospital, said the hospital property was auctioned by the IRS in April and was sold in May.
San Benito Enterprises, Inc. purchased it, Hoffman said Wednesday.
The $1.1 million was the tax liability San Benito Health Care 1 owed to the IRS, he added.
The new owner also must pay $350,000 in ad valorem taxes, Hoffman said.
Recently, San Benito Health Care 1 sued to halt the sale of the hospital, Hoffman said. That is still pending.
Officials at the Texas Secretary of State's office said both companies operate as limited liability corporations.
Businesses that operate as LLCs can save themselves from personal liability and profits and losses pass to the owners without taxation of the entity.
The hospital closed in October, leaving 110 employees without jobs.
At the time it closed, Hoffman said the nearby Harlingen medical community and the hospital's own debt contributed to the closing.
Afterward, city officials worked with the hospital owners to get the business back in operation, but communication between the two ground to a halt.
In January, City Manager Victor Trevino said he had not heard from hospital officials.
