IP Trunking, IP Trunk cards or VoIP Trunking provide both IP-PBX, CO switch interconnection of systems for off-loading IP traffic, compression (G.711-64 KBPS, G.723-5.3/6.3 KBPS, G.729-8 KBPS) and transmission of voice packets over an IP network or VPN-Virtual Private Network. VTL-Virtual Tie Line - a term used to connect PBX-Private Branch eXchange or CENTREX-CENtral office eXchange systems together for inter-organizational dialing. IP trunking allows organizations to use VTL-Virtual Tie Lines that carry voice traffic over the data network between offices. These virtual tie lines may bandwidth efficiency and cost of voice communications transported to other company offices by off-loading or bypassing the toll network. IP trunking may enables the use of intelligent call routing and a uniform dialing plan (for example, five-digit dialing) regardless of location (check with the manufacturer as there are limitations).
