Intellectual Ventures Files Patents Based Upon Visualant Technology

SEATTLE --(Business Wire)--

Visualant, Inc. (OTCQB: VSUL), a leading provider of disruptive light-based technologies, announced today that Intellectual Ventures (News - Alert) has filed three patents focused upon unique applications of the Visualant ChromaID™ technology.

Visualant and Intellectual Ventures (IV) entered into a strategic relationship late last year. Pursuant to that agreement Visualant provided ChromaID development kits to Intellectual Ventures for distribution to twenty inventors and inventor groups in the global IV Invention Network. Those inventors returned a significant number of invention disclosures from which IV will file a number of patents based upon the Visualant ChromaID technology.

The initial filings cover the use of the ChromaID technology in three diverse applications. They include the use of ChromaID for the non-invasive determination of blood-glucose levels, the use of ChromaID for food safety and milk products in particular, and the use of ChromaID for the certification and grading of diamonds and other gemstones. These pending patents are licensed to Visualant with royalties payable to Intellectual Ventures.

Ron Erickson, Visualant Founder and CEO, stated, "We have been very pleased with our collaboration with Intellectual Ventures. They are a group of wonderfully bright professionals who have accelerated the development of our intellectual property. These first patents provide a sense of the breadth and depth of the reach of our ChromaID technology. We look forward to additional patent filing from IV."

ChromaID is a breakthrough light-based identification and measurement technology, with the potential to disrupt traditional spectral analysis and other costly methods of identification, authentication, and diagnosis. The ChromaID development kits supplied to IV allow companies to work with the Visualant technology and explore unique applications of the technology to solve particular problems in their industry segment.

Eric Bell, Director, Investment Strategy at the Invention Development Fund of Intellectual Ventures, said, "Visualant is one of the first companies we have worked with to leverage our global inventor network and our intellectual property business development licensing resources. Their foundational ChromaID intellectual property has far reaching applications across several industries. We hope to file additional patents around the ChromaID technology and work with Visualant to license these applications to companies around the world."

About Visualant, Inc.

Visualant is a public company whose shares trade under the stock symbol, VSUL. The Visualant technology directs structured light onto a substance, through a liquid/gas, or off a surface, to capture a unique ChromaID. When matched against existing databases, a ChromaID can be used to identify, detect, or diagnosis markers invisible to the human eye. ChromaID scanner modules can be integrated into a variety of mobile or fixed-mount form factors. The patented technology is disruptive, making it possible to effectively conduct analyses in the field that could only previously be performed by large and expensive lab-based tests.
