Industrial Biotechnology: the Best Kept Secret in Green Jobs
--(Business Wire)--
Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO):
WHAT:
The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) will host a series of panel presentations on algae, green chemistry, and advanced biofuels to brief Congressional members and staff on the state of each technology, its potential for job creation, and the federal policies needed to drive commercialization. Speakers will address the breadth of commercial applications of industrial biotechnology, including algae-based technologies; cellulosic biofuels and biobutanol; and biobased plastics, polymers and specialty chemicals.
WHEN:
Thursday March 11, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. EST
WHERE:
Russell Senate Office Building, Room 328-A
SESSION 1:
Financing the Commercialization of Algae-based Technologies
11:00am-12:00pm
Recent investments in algae technologies by leading energy and chemical companies are the latest indication of both the promise and progress of algae to deliver sustainable, secure alternatives to fossil-based fuels and chemicals. But commercial deployment remains hampered by challenges in access to private capital combined with federal policies that put algae-based fuels at a competitive disadvantage with other high-promise advanced biofuels.

SESSION 2:
Renewable Chemicals and Biobased Products: A Green Jobs Revolution (News - Alert) for the U.S. Chemicals Industry
12:00-1:00pm
Building biorefineries to produce renewable chemicals and bio-products can create thousands of jobs in the next few years not just in the chemicals sector, but also in farming, construction and engineering, and advanced research. What is needed today is capital and investment in the U.S. chemical industry for manufacturing facilities.

SESSION 3:
Cellulosic and Advanced Biofuels: When Will We See the First Commercial Gallons?
2:00-3:00pm
The advanced biofuels industry is on the verge of commercialization. However, multiple factors have slowed the path the industry had been on. The advanced biofuels industry is ready to contribute in a significant way to the goals of the Obama administration and Congress to meet the goals set by the Renewable Fuel Standard.
