Indotel: 3 WiMax operators expected in Nov
(BNamericas.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) The Dominican Republic is expected to have three WiMax players offering services to the wider public in November, local press reported Jos Alfredo Rizek, director of the Dominican Republic's telecommunications regulator Indotel, as saying.
Broadband wireless provider Onemax launched a mobile WiMax 802.16E network deployed by French equipment supplier Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) on October 25. Two more players WindTelecom and Tricom are due to start next month with total investments among the three estimated at 2.2bn pesos (US$65mn), Rizek said.
Rizek said he expects the competition to drive down the cost of VoIP calls and data transfer by 20-25% in the short term.
For the last seven months Tricom has been offering WiMax exclusively to the business sector but is now ready to expand, Lisa Arzeno, Tricom's VP for corporate communications, was quoted as saying by local daily Listn Diario. Tricom spent 1bn pesos in network upgrades to offer the service.
According to Indotel, broadband access is currently around 23% compared to 8% in 2004.
