INDONESIA TRADE MIN: REGIONAL GOVT SHOULD HELP TRADITIONAL SHOPS

JAKARTA, Jul 07, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- Indonesian Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu has asked regional administrations to help develop traditional shops (`warung`) in the regions to enable them to compete with mini markets.

"We must help upgrade traditional shops so they could compete fairly (with modern retails). The regional administrations must help make them better," the minister said on Monday.

She cited as an example of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of Alfamart which helps upgrade `warungs` into "Alfa kiosks" by renovating their buildings and improving their goods supply.

"Such a model should be developed by regional administrations and modern retails. We hope there will be a balanced progress between those of modern and traditional, and small and big enterprises," she said.

She said traditional shops and modern shops had different market segments but still need support and protection from regional administrations to survive.

The trade ministry`s domestic trade director general, Subagyo, said the government also encouraged cigarette and beverage producers to carry out similar CSR projects like what Alfamart has done, by helping cigarette and beverage vendors sell their products.

Pangestu recently asked regional administrations to revitalize traditional markets by improving their buildings and management, in order to boost the local economies.

"In Presidential Regulation No. 112/2007 and Trade Minister`s Regulation No. 53/2008, the criteria of good markets are clearly stated. We need the regional administrations` commitment to realize it," the minister said when visiting Glodok traditional market, West Jakarta, last Saturday.

The 13,000 traditional markets in Indonesia could boost the people`s economy, she said.

The central government in June 2009 allocated stimulus funds amounting to Rp315 billion (US$30.87 million) for the development of traditional markets and warehouses.

"It`s now in the bidding process, before the end of this year, the revitalization program of 34 traditional markets is expected to be completed," the minister said.
