Indian designer Manish Arora's disciple, Ruben Galarreta, launches his brand

For Galarreta, born in 1987 in Logroño, Spain, life took an unexpected turn a year ago when, only one month after graduating from the Institute of Visual Arts, Design and Marketing in Madrid, he received a message from Arora asking to work with him.

"A week later I was in his New Delhi studio. I had to pass my final exams and miss my graduation, but my professors helped me a lot," the young designer, who is happy to have made the decision which has taken him to the front row of the fashion industry, told Efe.

"Really, I was surprised how a few days after arriving I was designing clothes for Manish's fashion show in Paris. I have also collaborated with him on many works for Walt Disney, Lady Gaga, in addition to assisting him for shows in Sydney, Belgrade, Paris...," he said.

The request to participate in the challenge to dress the singer Lady Gaga, whom Galarreta has always admired, was "quite a surprise", as it was not even two weeks after his arrival in India.

"One morning we received an e-mail from one of the stylists of Lady Gaga and Manish chose me to collaborate on the project. At first, I could not believe it. It took five days of hard work, but the reward was worth it: seeing Lady Gaga in London wearing our creations," he said.

According to Galarreta, designs for Gaga consisted of a "little daring mixture of expressing the typical footprints of an English rooster on neoprene and making a tight-fitted jumpsuit with a long neck and long sleeves." "Of course, some of the work was already done as I designed the sleeves of the style when I was studying in university and I have even used them in the wedding dress of one of my best friends," Galarreta added.

Now taking advantage of his stay in India, "where manpower and material is much cheaper than Europe," the Spanish designer has launched his own fashion brand: Ruben Galarreta, with "RR" as its logo.

Galarreta explains that although there is a significant cost saving in India, production is not a simple matter and "it needs a lot of patience, so the time could extend to the absolute limits." The designer described his first collection as something "very personal" with which he seeks to avoid the "contamination" of Arora's work: comfortable clothes, but with a few prints that make it a little extravagant and special, from hands that surround you to millions of necklaces, one superimposed on the other.

Galarreta does not hide his admiration for the ability possessed by the creative directors such as Jeremy Scott and Nicola Formichetti "for re-launching the brands like Moschino and Diesel, and taking them to the top" although influences also come from "singers, bloggers and ordinary people." The presence of the Spaniard in the Indian fashion industry has allowed him to expand his circle of friends in the sector, which made, for example, the photo shoot for the launch of his brand more like "a gathering of friends." "The multiculturalism is expressed in the session and reflects one of the ideas of the brand: clothes for everyone. There were friends from Africa, Europe, Asia and America, and the styles, despite being Western, used Indian wedding jewelery," he explains.

Galarreta prefers not to think a lot about the future, and "waits for the surprise factor", eager to comply with his greatest dream: "Seeing someone down the street with some of my designs," he said. EFE mt/lar/cat/kv/bj/amg (c) 2014 EFE News Services (U.S.) Inc.
