India Takes a Stand Against Social Media Giant's Free Internet Plan - Research and Markets

DUBLIN, February 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --

The Indian enterprise data market is to see high growth over the coming years due to the socio-political scenario, as noted in a recent India Enterprise Data Services report from Research and Markets. A large number of national and international corporations are heavily invested in this market, with Facebook leading the group. India is Facebook's largest market outside of the U.S., and the company has been using the country as a testing point for their free internet app, Free Basics. However, a data regulation services ruling[1] this week has seen the banning of the app, which the Indian telecom regulator believes violates net neutrality.

Free Basis provides free access to a number of Internet services including Wikipedia, health sites and Facebook. The app is part of Facebook's plan to bring the world oline, but net neutrality activists in India have been arguing for the past year that the app violates net neutrality by promoting specific services over others. As highlighted in a report, telecom regulators must recognize the factors required to sustain net neutrality in order to avoid a monopolization of global Internet access.

The Indian M2M market will be worth USD 7.10 billion by 2021, as stated in a recent report. The Free Basics ban could see an increase in this figure, as more Indians pay for Internet access. It could also work against this figure, as a potential market of millions unable to afford connectivity remains untapped.
