Impulse Group Los Angeles Brings Free Meningitis Vaccinations to West Hollywood

On Sunday, August 28th, in the wake of a recent and ongoing outbreak of meningitis, including 17 cases diagnosed in Los Angeles County in 2016, Impulse Group Los Angeles organized a community event in West Hollywood to help make the vaccination available to the local GLBTQ community, who this outbreak has affected the most.

With free vaccinations provided by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), Impulse Group Los Angeles encouraged the community to meet at Revolver Video Bar to receive their vaccination, free of charge, and in return event-goers would receive two drink tickets (three if they brought a friend) they could redeem inside for drinks of their choice. While the initial event guest list (on the event's Facebook (News - Alert) page) showed an expected attendance of 40, over 100 people signed up to get the vaccine exceeding initial expectations. While Impulse Group Los Angeles was able to accommodate over 90 people, those unable to receive the shot that day were referred to AHF Wellness Clinics. AHF is offering free meningitis vaccines at all four of its Southern California AHF Wellness Centers (Hollywood, Long Beach, San Fernando Valley and West Adams) as well as at three AHF Pharmacy sites (Long Beach, Sunset Blvd. and West Hollywood).

"At its heart, Impulse will always be a group for the community, by the community," said Impulse United Founder and President, Jose Ramos. "While we don't always have the luxury of foresight to see a meningitis outbreak coming, what's important is that we take action because what affects one of us, affects all of us."

Following the tremendous success of the WeHo event, Impulse Group Los Angeles has begun organizing a follow up event in the next several weeks at Revolver to continue offering free vaccinations to the GLBTQ community.

HEALTH NOTE: The meningitis vaccine provides protection for five (5) years, so any individual who may have been vaccinated during the cases or outbreaks reported in 2013 or 2014 does NOT need to get a booster shot or be re-vaccinated now. In addition, clients who are HIV positive will need a booster shot in 8-12 weeks.
