Hunton & Williams Launches Energy Sector Security Team

Hunton & Williams LLP announces the formation of a multidisciplinary Energy Sector Security team to assist clients with the legal complexities associated with growing cyber and physical threats facing energy companies. This new team is being led by cyber security partner Paul Tiao, energy partner Kevin Jones, and energy regulatory partner Linda Walsh, and includes lawyers from a wide range of practice groups within the firm.

"Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, federal, state and foreign laws have grown increasingly complex," said Tiao, who is a former Assistant US Attorney and recently served as Senior Counselor for Cybersecurity and Technology to the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. At the same time, threats to critical infrastructure, including those posed by severe weather events, sophisticated cyber attacks, and physical sabotage have been evolving at an alarming pace."

Hunton & Williams is launching the Energy Sector Security team to assist clients with these emerging challenges. The team will advise energy companies on legal and regulatory compliance, physical and cyber security risk minimization, strategic engagement with key government gencies, comprehensive incident response, insurance coverage, and dispute resolution arising from law enforcement investigations, government enforcement actions, and private litigation.

Hunton & Williams has represented the energy industry since the firm was founded more than 100 years ago. The Energy Sector Security team will work with companies in the electric utility, oil, natural gas, pipeline, coal, nuclear, renewable energy and clean power, and related sectors to minimize the risks and consequences of a serious security incident.
