Hungary raises EUR 418mn from sale of mobile frequencies [IntelliNews - Weekly Reports]

(IntelliNews - Weekly Reports Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Hungary's tender for the usage rights of frequencies in the 800 MHz and 2600 MHz bands as well as the available parts of the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands has generated HUF 130.6bn (EUR 417.5mn) in revenues, telecoms regulator National Media and Telecommunications Authority (NMHH) informed in a statement. The amount exceeded the initially expected HUF 104bn.

All four bidders, which took part in the competition, won rights to use the frequencies until 2034. They have submitted 13 bids for nine blocks.

Magyar Telekom won the A block for HUF 33.2bn and the smaller blocks E and F for HUF 15bn and HUF 10.4bn, respectively. The telecom will pay HUF 58.65bn for the packages and capitalise HUF 36.8bn for the present value of the future annual band fees related to the frequencies in Q4 2014, the company said in a statement.

Vodafone got the licences for the C block for HUF 27.2bn and the smaller block G for HUF 3bn. Telenor won the B block for HUF 31.7bn.

Alternative telecom operator DIGI won the F block for HUF 10bn and became to fourth company that will offer mobile services on the Hungarian market. It is expected to take about 18 months for the company to build its mobile network, NMHH said.

It is considered that the frequency utilisation will encourage competition among businesses and accelerate the deployment of broadband networks. It is also part of NMHH's long-term strategy for providing broadband mobile services virtually anywhere and to anyone in the country.
