Hundreds battle to chop hospital parking charges
(Daily Record Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)HUNDREDS of people have signed an online petition protesting against parking charges at hospitals.
The long list of names is published on the Scottish Parliament's website and will be considered by the Public Petitions Committee (PPC) on June 15.
It could result in ministers being forced to reconsider whether patients and their families should be charged to park at hospitals.
The Record has been flooded with I complaints about fees which can be as I high as pounds 15 per day. And yesterday, 669 people had signed the petition started by student nurse Louise MacLeod.
A Scottish Parliament spokesman said: "The online petitions are all considered by the PPC and can then be passed to another committee or to the Scottish Executive for consideration.
"In some cases, petitions have resulted in the Government addressing an issue directly and even changing the law in some cases.
"The hospital parking petition will remain open for people to sign until June 5."
An Executive spokesman said: "While car park charging is a matter for NHS Boards, charging should not be introduced to generate income unless to cover the cost of providing, managing or improving parking facilities.
"Sufficient car park spaces and concessionary rates should be available for staff and consideration given to providing concessions to patients who attend regularly for things like dialysis or radiotherapy.
"A reasonable proportion of parking spaces for disabled drivers and passengers should be provided and their needs fully considered."
The petition calls on the parliament to urge the Executive to conduct an inquiry into excessive car parking charges at NHSScotland hospitals.
Last week, the Record told how hospital car parking bosses sent cancer victim Douglas Mills a demand for pounds 50 on the day his widow Christine buried him.
