Huawei and LG Uplus to deploy the world's first OTN for LTE-A CPRI backhaul

(ENP Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ENP Newswire - 18 April 2014 Release date- 15042014 - Seoul, South Korea - LG Uplus, a leading mobile service provider in South Korea, and Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced that they will take the lead in using WDM/OTN technology for common public radio interface (CPRI) backhaul on LG UpLus's LTE-A network, marking a breakthrough in the field of LTE-A backhaul technology.

The CPRI-over-WDM/OTN solution enables pooled baseband processing for distributed base stations, saving fiber resources and improving network reliability. The solution is a typical application of the 'WDM/OTN-to-the-edge' idea in LTE backhaul scenarios.

As a mobile broadband pioneer committed to '100% LTE', LG UpLus was among the first to commercialize LTE-A in the industry and promises to provide first-class LTE services to customers. LG UpLus extensively adopts pooled baseband processing for distributed base stations on its LTE-A network, to maximize bandwidth and spectrum efficiency, minimize interference caused by coverage overlap, and occupy less footprint. It is estimated that a centralized baseband processing pool in dense metropolitan areas should connect to over 100 remote radio units (RRUs). Traditionally, the RRUs are directly connected to the pool using fibers. This requires considerable fiber resources and does not allow service protection configurations.

Thanks to continuous research in the WDM/OTN field, Huawei broke new ground by innovatively using WDM/OTN technology for LTE backhaul. Only a single fiber pair is required to backhaul multiple CPRIs from RRUs to the baseband processing pool, greatly saving fiber resources. OTN ring protection for the CPRIs, which is based on unique delay compensation technology, greatly enhances network reliability. Additionally, OTN allows for accurate line performance monitoring and fault diagnosis.

'This is significant development of WDM/OTN technology for common public radio interface (CPRI) backhaul based on world-renowned technology by LG Uplus and Huawei which will serve as meaningful practice, and we will continue taking the lead in LTE technology through joint cooperation.' said Changgil Cho, Vice President of Technology Development Center from LG Uplus.

'With the development of mobile broadband, high-speed WDM transport is no longer confined to the backbone. It has been extended to the metro core, and will be applied to the metro edge in the LTE-A era. LG UpLus and Huawei's innovation in LTE-A backhaul is a meaningful practice of WDM/OTN-to-the-edge,' said Jack Wang, President of the Huawei transmission network product line.

As operators' optimal partner for NG WDM networks, Huawei has helped construct more than two hundred 100G commercial WDM networks. Huawei has also been widely recognized by the industry for its 100G innovation, products and services. Advancing the era of the 100G optical network, Huawei provides communication channels as wide as the Pacific Ocean, enriching life through communication.
