House spending bills benefit projects in Chattanooga

(Chattanooga Times (Free Press, TN) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Jun. 15--Two bills passed by the U.S. House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday include $1.3 million for the Workforce Training Center at Enterprise South industrial park and $3 million for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's SIM Center.

The Workforce Training Center funding was in the fiscal 2007 Labor-Health and Human Services spending measure and will provide technical training to employees. The center has the potential to develop 8,000 new jobs and attract industry to the area, officials said.

"This training center is an essential part of our package necessary to attract a large and highly technical employer to Enterprise South, and I am enthusiastic about the opportunity provided by Congressman (Zach) Wamp's excellent leadership and support," Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield said in a statement.

The fiscal 2007 Defense appropriations bill includes the SIM Center funding for hydrogen fuel cell research.

Dr. D.L. Whitfield, director of the SIM Center, said the money would be used to help the lab develop a 100-kilowatt fuel cell unit. Fuel cells are viewed as an alternative energy generator that could reduce the United States' dependence on foreign oil.

The SIM Center is conducting the research with Ion America, a Silicon Valley-based company.

"It'll take more than $3 million, but it's not a one-year effort," Dr. Whitfield said. "We appreciate the support for the Chattanooga fuel cell project."

Rep. Wamp, R-Tenn., who sits on the House Appropriations Committee, said the funding will help promote economic development and job creation in Chattanooga and East Tennessee. "Training our workers for the new global market and developing technology that will help wean us off foreign oil... will create a new market sector in America that other countries will be envious of," he said in a statement.
