Hornets open home schedule Monday vs. Ennis

The Athens Hornets, fresh off a win in their season opener, will play their first home basketball game of the 2009 season next week.
The Hornets host the Ennis Lions in a non-district contest Monday at AHS Gym. Ninth-grade and junior varsity action is scheduled to start at 5 p.m., with the varsity beginning around 6:30.
Head Coach Tracy Carter's Hornets are coming off a 63-51 win over Kilgore Thursday night.
The Hornets held a 29-24 lead at halftime but watched the Bulldogs shrink that lead to 39-38 heading into the fourth quarter. That's when the Hornets' defensive pressure began to wear on Kilgore.
Kendall Sanders, who had 15 points to lead the Hornets, scored 10 fourth-quarter points and Nick Monmouth had six of his 12 in the final frame. The defensive spark was triggered by Xavier Harris, who finished with five points.
The Hornets outscored the Bulldogs, 24-13, in the fourth.
"This was a good win on the road,"aEUR^Carter said, "especially considering the limited practice time."
The Hornet football team made the playoffs and didn't see its season end until last Saturday.
Desmond Bowie was also among the Hornets in double figures with 11. Jared Tilley had eight, Jonathon Dora six, Robert Donnell five and C.J. Tatum scored one.
The junior varsity Hornets also beat Kilgore, 57-32. Terrance Behan led the way with 12 points and Patrick Clark had 10. DeMarquis Mims pitched in eight.
The freshman also beat Kilgore, 39-36. Jonvonte Johnson had 12 points while Carter Harraid had eight to match Jesse Durham. Keelin Lawyer scored six.
