Holiday Gifting Has Gone Social: 20% of Americans Post Gift Ideas and Gifts Received


Ebates.com, a pioneer and leader in online cash back shopping, today announced results of its annual Holiday survey that shows the #1 most popular social media network Americans post on about gifts and holiday parties during the holiday season is Facebook, according to more than half of the country (63%). This was followed by Twitter (News - Alert) at #2 by a comparatively lower portion of America (19%). Instagram (18%), YouTube (14%), and Pinterest (13%) are also social media networks among the top five most popular platforms for posting during the holidays.

How Americans Use Social Media During Holidays

When it comes to how Americans use social media during the holiday season, more than half of the country (57%) say they wish friends and family happy holidays via social media. Another 4 in 10 (40%) share photos/videos of their loved ones while 1 in 5 (22%) post pictures of the gifts they received. Additional popular uses of social media during the holidays include sharing gift ideas (18%), going to a favorite brand's social media site to get deals or gift ideas (18%), and sharing selfies (17%).

Nearly 3 in 4 (70%) Americans credit social media for making the hoiday season easier for them. Top reasons consumers indicate how social media simplifies their holidays include feeling connected with friends and family who are all around the world (39%) and being inspired by different holiday decorations and photos that are shared (28%). Other popular ways social media makes the holidays easier are getting gift ideas from other friends/social media pages of brands (27%), previewing holiday shopping deals advertised through social media (26%), and seeing where friends and family are traveling to stay updated on their holiday plans (23%).
