Hillsboro School Board to revise policies on searches, personal communication devices and social media [The Oregonian, Portland, Ore. :: ]

(Oregonian (Portland, OR) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) July 29--The Hillsboro School Board is scheduled to approve revisions to several policies on Tuesday night, including those for searches, personal communication devices and social media, and weapons in schools, among others.

During its first meeting in more than a month, board members are expected to approve changes to five policies, plus conduct first readings of an additional four.

Controversy erupted last year at Hillsboro's R.A. Brown Middle School after staff reviewed and deleted video on students' cell phones. The biggest change in policy language surrounding searches and seizures states, "A search of a student's person or property, including personal communication devices, may be conducted when there is reasonable suspicion to believe the search is likely to produce evidence of a violation of law, Board policy, administrative regulation or school rule." Kim Strelchun is the current board chair and Monte Akers is vice chair. But Hillsboro city records show Akers has filed for the city council Ward 2 position currently filled by Council President Aron Carleson, who will be term-limited this fall. His term started in 2011 and ends in 2017.

The Hillsboro School Board meets Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. for a work session and 7:30 p.m. for the regular session in the district's administration center, 3083 N.E. 49th Place.
