NDUS Senate The North Dakota University System has initiated the first-ever state staff senate at a leadership conference held at UND.
Janice Hoffarth, who serves as president of the UND Staff Senate, was elected president of the NDUS Staff Senate. Janine Trowbridge, North Dakota State University in Fargo, will serve as vice president; Mary Morell, Bismarck State College, will be secretary; and Cindy Rerick, Lake Region State College, was chosen to be communications officer.
NDUS has never had a body made up exclusively of nonfaculty employees from its 11 colleges and universities.
The NDUS Staff Senate hopes to set up a network for information to flow from the state Legislature and Board of Higher Education to NDUS staff members. It also will work with the chancellor to establish a nonvoting representative on the Board of Higher Education.
The NDUS Staff Senate will meet yearly for face-to-face meetings, although it will convene via Interactive Video Network conference calls or through e-mail as needed throughout the year. Next year's meeting will be held at Bismarck State College.
Pearson honored Judy Pearson is the 2008 recipient of the Samuel L. Becker Distinguished Service Award at the Annual National Communication Association Convention in San Diego. Pearson is the associate dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at NDSU.

Beyond her work with students, Pearson's books, Gender and Communication and Communication in the Family create a framework for provocative discussions about relationships and families.
Best-paid University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks is near the top when it comes to compensation for public university presidents.
The Chronicle of Higher Education ranks him No. 7 on the list, with salary and benefits of $733,421.
The list comes out just days after Bruininks announced he froze his pay and that of other executives.
President search The criteria are set for first-round interviews to select the next president of Williston (N.D.) State College.
A search committee has drafted a series of questions to ask in interviews during the week of Dec. 8.
Williston State President Joe McCann plans to step down next April. He said he wants a new challenge, and the two-year school needs a new leader.
McCann has been Williston State's president for eight years.
College faculty gave him a no-confidence vote last January, but he said that did not influence his decision.
