The
Next Step for Mobile Wallets: General-Purpose Platforms
Heartland Chairman and CEO Robert
O. Carr believes better collaboration on open technology
platforms, which allows different players to build mobile
payment applications more easily, is the key to breaking out
of the competitive logjam for mobile wallet developers.
Mobile wallets are the latest technology in the payments industry,
but if the wallet is not making the consumer's life easier, it won't
be adopted. General-purpose mobile wallets and the companies that
can aggregate different applications will be the ones that will win
as mobile payments solutions consolidate. In his keynote address,
Carr will highlight the benefits of general purpose and open
technology platforms and what mobile wallets should look like in the
future.
Following his keynote address, Carr will sign his 2014
autobiography "Through
the Fires: An American Business Story of Turbulence, Triumph and
Giving Back."
Who:
From his start as an idealistic entrepreneur operating on a
shoestring, Carr founded Heartland
Payment Systems (NYSE: HPY),
one of the largest debit and credit card transaction companies in
America. Just as important, he earned a national reputation as a
trailblazer for ethical reform of the payments industry.
He led Heartland from a modest start-up with 25 employees in 1997 to
a Fortune 1000 company that employs more than 4,100 colleagues.
Heartland's customers range from major retail chains to mom-and-pop
restaurants and retailers as well as campuses and school districts
in some of America's largest cities.
In an age of increasing cyber assaults, Carr has led Heartland to
become a gold standard in security strategy. After a remarkable
recovery from the 2008 international hacking conspiracy, Heartland
emerged as a champion in the fight against cybercrime. The
company's Merchant
Bill of Rights, meanwhile, has been lauded for its
transparency in payments billing.
Growing up in the countryside near Lockport, Illinois, the son of a
waitress who worked the night shift to help support the family, Carr
attended the University of Illinois where he earned a bachelor's
degree in mathematics and a master's degree in computer science.
Carr serves on the board of trustees at Lewis University in
Illinois. He is the founder of the Give
Something Back Foundation, which provides financial support to
college students from poor and working-class backgrounds.
