Health eVillages Founder Donates Funds to Complete Lwala Community Hospital's Expansion

READING, Mass., Dec. 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Health eVillages, a philanthropic program founded by global healthcare activist Donato Tramuto and Aptus Health, in partnership with the not-for-profit Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization, today announced the funding is complete for an expansive new wing of the Lwala Community Hospital in Kenya. The funds come from dozens of individual donors to Health eVillages, including Tramuto's own private foundation, which closed the fundraising campaign with a generous donation.

The newly opened wing expands the rural hospital's capacity and helps better address the healthcare needs of its growing patient population.

The new wing will include:

    12 patient beds
  • Two exam rooms for outpatient visits
  • Full separation of the well-child visit area from sick-patient areas
  • Separate men's and women's in-patient wards
  • A pharmacy and new laboratory space with specialized rooms for blood drawing, sterilization and microbiology
  • New space for HIV-AIDS counseling

The expansion offers increased access to high-quality healthcare throughout the year, including during the peak malaria season. It also increases the hospital's capacity to provide HIV-AIDS enrollment and care, family planning, maternal and child health services, adolescent sexual and reproductive health services, and other services that will contribute to an improved quality of life for the surrounding community.

This most recent donation in support of the expansion was spurred by Tramuto's prior visit to the hospital, where he saw first-hand its profound impact on the rural Kenyan community. "Along with helping to significantly reduce infant and maternal mortality rates, the hospital is the heart of the community," Tramuto said. "It is a place of healing, a space for gathering and socializing, and a source of stable, meaningful jobs."

On his visit, Tramuto witnessed the hospital's clear need for more space. "Everyone would agree that all mothers deserve a safe and comfortable place to deliver their babies, but when you see for yourself a woman in labor squeezed into a tiny room, the message hits home," Tramuto added.

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the new wing will take place at the hospital next spring, with Tramuto and other Health eVillages representatives planning to attend.
